How the Small Caps Generator Works

There are two completely different things called small caps, and knowing which one you need saves a lot of confusion.

The first is a font feature. Professional typefaces ship purpose-drawn small capitals, and you switch them on with the OpenType smcp feature — in CSS, font-variant-caps: small-caps. The letters look correct because a designer drew them at the right weight, and the underlying text is still ordinary lowercase, so it stays searchable and screen readers read it normally. If you control the stylesheet, this is what you should use.

The second is what this page produces: individual Unicode characters that happen to be shaped like small capitals. ᴀ is not a styled a, it is a separate character with its own code point. That is why it survives places where you have no stylesheet at all — an Instagram bio, a Discord nickname, a spreadsheet cell, a game username.

The conversion itself is a lookup: each lowercase letter is exchanged for its small-capital counterpart, and everything else is passed through untouched. Digits have no small-cap forms, so 2026 stays 2026, and punctuation and emoji are left alone.

The Two Letters Unicode Never Encoded

The alphabet is incomplete, and every small caps tool has to make a decision about it. Most make it silently and badly.

The reason is historical. Unicode did not set out to provide a small-caps alphabet — these characters exist because phonetic notation needs them as distinct letters, so they were added over the years across three unrelated blocks: IPA Extensions, Phonetic Extensions and Latin Extended-D. Letters that phoneticians had no use for were simply never encoded.

Lowercase is the default, and it is the better answer for a reason that is easy to miss: a lowercase x is already exactly x-height — which is the height small caps are drawn at. Dropped into ꜰᴏx it is very nearly invisible as a substitution, while a full capital ꜰᴏX towers over the letters beside it. Lowercase q has a descender and so is a slightly worse fit, but it is still closer than a cap-height Q.

Keeping lowercase has a second benefit. It is the only choice that survives a round trip: a lowercase x converts back to a lowercase x, whereas a capital X is indistinguishable from one you typed yourself and comes back capitalised.

The alternatives are there if you want them. A normal capital is unmistakable, which matters if the letter must be unambiguous — a product code, say. The rare ꞯ is a genuine small capital and looks perfect where it renders, but it produces a tofu box on a large share of Android phones, and a box is not a compromise, it is a broken word.

Why Capitals Stay Full Height

By default this tool leaves your existing capitals alone and only converts lowercase. That is not an oversight — it is what small caps are.

In typography, small caps exist to give you a second tier between lowercase and full capitals. A name set in small caps keeps its initial at full height and drops the rest to roughly x-height, so the word reads as emphasised without shouting. Flattening every letter to the same small-cap height gives you all-caps in a smaller size, which is a different effect and a noticeably louder one.

The distinction matters for round-tripping too. With capitals preserved, converting back to plain text is lossless — the capitals were never touched, so they come back exactly as typed. With the toggle off, the original capitalisation is genuinely unrecoverable, because nothing in the output records that a letter was once uppercase. Small Caps vs All Caps vs "Tiny Text"

These get searched for interchangeably and produce very different results.

• Small caps — capital letterforms at roughly the height of a lowercase x. What this page makes. Reads as quiet emphasis.
• All caps — ordinary capital letters. Your keyboard already does this and no tool is needed. Reads as shouting.
• Tiny text — usually means superscript or subscript characters, which are a different and much sparser Unicode set with large gaps. It is a distinct effect, not a smaller version of this one.
• Font generators — most sites bundle a dozen styles behind one box. That is convenient and it is also why their output so often contains broken characters: bundling hides which specific set a given style comes from, and therefore where it will fail.

Where Small Caps Work and Where They Do Not

Bios, usernames and display names

The main use. Instagram, TikTok, Discord and Twitter all accept these characters in bios and display names. Discord nicknames cap at 32 characters and each small cap counts as one, so length behaves normally here — unlike most decorative text styles.

Search, accessibility and the catch worth knowing

This is the honest downside, and no other page on this topic seems willing to say it. Because ᴀ is a separate character rather than a styled a, a search for your name in ordinary letters will not match your small-caps version, and a screen reader may read the characters out oddly or skip them. Never use this for a page heading, a job title, an email subject or anything someone needs to find by searching. Use CSS small caps there instead.

Documents and spreadsheets

Fine in a cell or a caption. In Word or Google Docs, though, use the built-in small caps formatting — it keeps the text as real letters, so spellcheck, find-and-replace and search all keep working.
